FAQ's
Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.
What does a mural cost?
This is the most commonly asked question on the phone. There
really isn't a way to generalize the cost of a mural, many factors
effect a mural's estimate. Sometimes a large mural with lots of sky
and ocean can be  a lot less expensive than a mural half the size
with many up close detailed elements. Some factors that can effect
the price of a mural are:

  • Wall texture and condition. Deep textured walls require
more time and materials to paint. Wallpapered walls require
special priming. Smooth walls are easiest.

  • Ease of set up, workable conditions. Ceilings, stairways,
difficult areas to reach generally add to the cost.

  • Mural design time. People don't always realize how much
design time that can go into creating a custom mural. Often
times I spend several hours searching for appropriate images,
sketching a concept and griding it for scaling on the wall.

  • Mural detail. Simple murals, like cartoon characters, take
much less time to paint. Trompe L'oeil (fool the eye) designs
are much more time consuming. Abstract wall treatments and
more 'painterly'  murals fall somewhere in the middle.

What surfaces can and cannot be painted on?
With paint technology what it is, virtually any surface may be painted on. Don't limit your imagination to
walls, floors and ceilings. Think indoors and outdoors. Permanent and movable. Pool and hot tub covers,
fences, patios, roller shades, fireplace screens, inside or on cabinets, or wallcovered surfaces. Don't be
afraid to ask. I enjoy the challenge of researching procedures for unusual requests. If I can't do it, I will try
to find who can.
Surfaces that I don't recommend painting are those that are severely damaged or deteriorating. They can
be painted but the longevity of the mural may be compromised.

How long does a mural last?
There are murals that have lasted thousands of years. Some are as clear and brilliant as the day they were
painted. Others have faded and peeled. There are many factors that effect the longevity of a mural.

  • Exposure to light. Certain paints and pigments are not as lightfast as others. Lower quality paints tend
to fade more quickly. Certain colors like reds and yellows may fade more quickly than other colors.
A mural's location to direct sunlight will effect stability of colors.

  • Wall surface preparation. Properly prepared surfaces  will last many times longer than a  poorly
prepared surface. Proper cleaning, sanding and priming on certain surfaces is required. Unstable or
contaminated surfaces, like concrete walls with efflorescence, must be inspected thoroughly and
treated accordingly. Improper preparation can lead to cracking or peeling.

  • Paint quality and correct type of paint. Paint is a huge component of longevity. Painting an outdoor
mural with indoor house paint is a common mistake. Outdoor paints are more flexible to endure
adverse conditions and use pigments that are going to maintain color much longer. Cheap paints
often use poor quality pigments. Craft paints are not durable in areas with any traffic. Before hiring
an artist make sure to ask what type of paints are going to be used. Depending on the job, I may use
a high quality outdoor paint, high quality indoor house paint, Flashe vinyl gouache or acrylic artists
paint. Using a proper topcoat will also protect the mural from most elements and ensure a longer
    lifespan.
